Wireless charging - how does it work?

Wireless charging is a modern technology that is becoming more and more popular among mobile device users. Thanks to it, we can charge our smartphones, tablets or smartwatches without having to connect cables.

Qi standard – Wireless charging of devices

Qi (pronounced /tʃiː/, or "CHEE", from the Chinese word 气 qi) is a popular standard for wireless energy transfer, based on inductive charging technology. It allows you to charge Qi-compatible devices, such as smartphones, by placing them on a special charging pad. This process works at a distance of up to 4 cm, and the maximum charging power is 15W.

Created by the Wireless Power Consortium, Qi is an open, universal standard. This means that any device supporting this protocol can be charged with any Qi charger, regardless of manufacturer. Qi debuted in 2008 and by 2017 it was supported in over 200 different devices, such as smartphones, tablets and other electronic devices. By the end of December 2023, this standard was supported by 351 manufacturers, including companies such as Apple, Asus, Google, Huawei, LG, Samsung, Xiaomi and Sony.

In January 2024, a newer version of this standard was introduced - Qi2, which offers even greater possibilities and improved performance.

MagSafe technology – Magnetic charging from Apple

MagSafe is an innovative magnetic technology developed by Apple, built into the internal design of iPhone 12, 13, 14 and 15 models. Originally created as a security system for the charging cables in MacBooks, MagSafe has been adapted for iPhones, creating a new ecosystem of accessories that make it easier to attach and speed up wireless charging.

Thanks to the MagSafe charger, iPhone 12, 13, 14 and 15 users can use the full potential of their devices and new accessories. While these iPhone models are compatible with other Qi chargers, MagSafe chargers provide faster charging, reaching up to 15W, while standard Qi chargers offer up to 7.5W.
